Outreach East is proud to partner with the SpartanNash Foundation during its retail scan campaign to provide hunger relief in the local community. Between Oct. 22nd and Nov 2nd store guests who visit the VG’s Of Davison will have the opportunity to donate $1, $5, $10 or round up their purchase at any checkout lane, with 100 percent of dollars raised going directly to Outreach East.
“While the pandemic may be ‘over,’ Outreach East deeply values these additional fundraising efforts,” said Jan Lebert of Outreach East. “We’ve seen a 20% increase in clients over the past few months compared to last year, driven by inflation and rising rents, especially impacting our seniors.”
Outreach East’ mission is to promote a healthy, caring and just community for all people by providing basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter; supplying crisis support, emergency services; and encouraging neighbors to help neighbors in need.
SpartanNash – which owns the Vg’s Groceries of Davison Store – underwrites the cost of the fundraising campaign so that all donations will benefit Outreach East and families in need in the local community.
“One in 6 people” said Adrienne struggles with hunger, and as little as $1 can provide up to four meals for those in need through Chance, SpartanNash vice president communications and executive director of the SpartanNash Foundation. “Each of our corporate-owned stores has hand-selected a partner pantry, so that we can work together to provide hunger relief in the communities where SpartanNash associates and our store guests live and work.”
SpartanNash distributes grocery products to independent and chain retailers in 50 states and its 146 corporate-owned retail stores in addition to fresh produce distribution. Through its MDV military division, SpartanNash is a leading distributor of grocery products to U.S. military commissaries around the world.
We need your support! When you visit VG’s in Davison (8503 Davison Rd, Davison, MI 48423), please contribute to the “Help Feed Those in Need” campaign.
The need for support in Genesee County, Michigan, remains urgent, with many families, children, and seniors facing significant economic hardship. The county’s poverty and food insecurity rates are notably high; Genesee County’s overall poverty rate is higher than the state average, and childhood food insecurity is also a major concern, being higher than the Michigan state rate.
This means many of our neighbors are struggling with the impossible choice between paying for essentials like rent or utilities and putting nutritious food on the table. For our children, whose development is critical, and for our growing population of seniors on fixed incomes, the cost of living—especially rising food and utility prices—exacerbates an already difficult situation. As a vital, non-denominational emergency resource center for East Genesee County, Outreach East steps into this gap to provide essential support like food, clothing, utility assistance, and other resources – serving thousands of community members (over 8500) annually.

The “best” way depends on your goals, the type of assets you have, and whether you want to maximize tax benefits for your heirs while also supporting the nonprofit. Here are the main options people usually consider:
Name the Charity as a Beneficiary
Retirement Accounts (IRA, 401k, 403b): These are often the most tax-efficient assets to leave to charity, since nonprofits don’t pay income tax but your heirs would.
Life Insurance Policies: You can name the nonprofit as a full or partial beneficiary.
Bank or Investment Accounts (POD/TOD designations): Add the nonprofit as a payable-on-death (POD) or transfer-on-death (TOD) beneficiary.
Easy to set up, doesn’t require rewriting your will, and avoids probate.
Include a Bequest in Your Will or Trust
Specific Bequest: Leave a set dollar amount.
Percentage Bequest: Leave a percentage of your estate (helps account for changes in your estate value).
Residuary Bequest: Leave what’s left after other gifts and expenses are settled.
Flexible, but may go through probate.
Charitable Trusts (for larger estates)
Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT): Provides income to you or loved ones for life, with the remainder going to the charity.
Charitable Lead Trust (CLT): Pays the charity for a set time, then passes remaining assets to heirs—often with tax advantages.
Useful if you want to balance supporting family and charity, while reducing estate or gift taxes.
Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)
You can create a DAF during your lifetime, donate into it (with tax benefits), and name your heirs or the nonprofit to receive the remainder when you pass.
Tips:
Be clear in naming the charity (legal name, address, tax ID).
If you want to restrict how the gift is used (e.g., food pantry only), put that in writing with the nonprofit ahead of time.
Talk with both your estate planning attorney and possibly the nonprofit’s development office to align your wishes.
If you have heirs, retirement accounts usually go to charities and non-retirement assets to people (to minimize taxes).
Your Legacy Lives On
Every gift—large or small—helps ensure that no family in our community has to face hunger or crisis alone. By planning today, you’ll leave behind a legacy of kindness, stability, and hope.

Why an online auction? As a food pantry and emergency resource center, we know how important it is to have a steady stream of funding to provide essential services to those in need. That’s why we have chosen to fundraise through monthly online auctions. By conducting online auctions, we are able to tap into a new source of funding that can help us stabilize our funding and plan for future expenses.
Our online auctions provide a fun and engaging way for the community to get involved in our mission. We offer unique items and experiences that are not available through other fundraising channels, which generates excitement and interest from potential supporters. Plus, by conducting monthly auctions, our supporters can look forward to participating in them as a regular part of their giving routine.
Overall, our monthly online auctions are an effective way for us to engage the community, offer unique items and experiences, diversify our funding sources, and generate recurring revenue. We appreciate the support of our community and hope that you will consider participating in our next online auction. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those in need.
